At the start of 2025, I found myself debating whether to renew my Netflix subscription when I came across G-movie’s review of the webtoon Trauma Center. Just reading the review brought tears to my eyes, making me feel like I couldn’t waste another moment hesitating. Why is that? I’ve realized that every time I encounter the intense lives of others, a deep sense of emotion wells up within me.
Everyone has their own way of overcoming the occasional sense of life’s futility. For some, the wise words of figures like Ven. Pomnyun offer great solace. But for me, the most powerful inspiration comes from stories of people living fiercely in this era. Among them, Dr. Lee Guk-jong stands out as the person who shakes me awake the most.
Even just watching a few of Dr. Lee’s lectures or documentaries—his presence, both physically and emotionally impactful—makes my anxieties and worries feel insignificant. Despite facing constant challenges at the trauma center, he continues to fight tirelessly to save lives. Witnessing his intense dedication, I make a promise to myself every time: I don’t want to spend the rest of my life idly. While no one’s life is trivial, I’ve realized that my work must bring me both a sense of mission and happiness.
Building My Own Skills
Reading Dr. Lee’s book Golden Hour reveals how deeply he cared for each member of his team, even amid relentless hardships. No matter how talented a single individual may be, there are limits to what they can achieve alone. That’s why assembling a strong team is so critical.
In the early stages of a career, we often get caught up in the immediate tasks at hand. But over time, we start to see the bigger picture. We recognize systemic issues and realize that unless we change the system, the same problems will persist. Changing a system is a difficult and painful process, but those who succeed in doing so create real change and value.
True Leaders Build Consensus
Watching Netflix’s Trauma Center series or related dramas, I’m struck by one recurring thought: even a simple line like “Join my team” carries profound meaning. Observing and learning from better systems makes me wish we could implement similar improvements here. This straightforward and clear sense of determination is something we should all strive to emulate.
Ultimately, when I have doubts, it may simply mean I haven’t convinced myself yet. But what I’ve learned from Dr. Lee’s story is this: instead of wavering, I need to assign myself a sense of duty and live a life of action.
Finding Romance in Work
Cherishing the time I have left, I want to pursue work that drives me to act out of a sense of responsibility, without anyone having to tell me to do so. I want to live like Dr. Lee and others who dedicate themselves to living fiercely.
I hope that many people, through Netflix’s Trauma Center or Golden Hour, will come to appreciate the value of living an intense and meaningful life, using their time and energy in better ways. Perhaps it all starts with a simple resolution: “I will find happiness in what I do.”
The Beginning of an Essential Life in My 40s
As I enter my 40s, I’m becoming more aware of the importance of living an “essential” life. Focusing on life’s essence and dedicating energy to what truly matters ultimately leads to a better life. This essentialism isn’t something that happens overnight. I now realize that my 20s and 30s were the foundation-building years.
The amount of struggle, failure, and sensitivity I experienced during my younger years seems to directly influence the efficiency I enjoy now. The lessons I learned from facing challenges without fear have accumulated, allowing me to complete tasks in five hours that once took ten. Those past hardships and mistakes have made me stronger and more efficient today.
The Process of Developing Conviction
Living an essential life isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about focusing on what truly matters. It means no longer wasting time on the unnecessary and pouring energy into what’s genuinely important. The mistakes and hardships of my 20s and 30s were painful, but without them, I wouldn’t have the maturity and insight I have now.
Now, it’s time to build on those experiences and think about how to use the remaining time in my life more meaningfully. Your 40s are a period of getting closer to life’s essence. It’s a time to take the skills and wisdom you’ve gained and craft your own essential life. Reflect on your younger self and prepare to strengthen the person you are today.
